Frequently Asked Questions

Provider Enrollment

When will provider applications be transitioned to WPS? Because of the CMS 60-day processing time frame, will they be worked as a priority or mixed in with other WPS applications?
Provider applications will be transitioned to WPS at the March 1st cutover date. WPS will assume the Wheatland's inventory of applications after the cutoff date. WPS anticipates meeting the 60- day time frame for processing new provider applications. How the work will be internally distributed is up to the application processing department. Although providers may call for an update, this is discouraged. WPS posts the receipt date of applications on which it is currently working on the web site.

We understand that Wheatlands will forward provider applications and attachments to WPS for processing after February 29th. Some of these applications will have CMS 588 forms attached authorizing Wheatlands to do EFTs. How will WPS handle these applications that need an updated CMS-588 form? Will the processing be further delayed?
An updated CMS-588 form will be required if the 588 form sent with the original application authorized Wheatlands to initiate EFTs. At this time it is not advisable to send a single 588 form to WPS assuming it will be matched up with the application. The processing area will be asked to advise in this situation and a follow-up answer will com. It is not anticipated that this issue will delay the application process any longer than it will take to request and receive an updated form

Is it necessary to complete a CMS-588 form (Electronic Funds Transfer Agreement) for each individual provider in the practice?
No, although individual providers may have received a letter from WPS requesting an updated CMS-588 form, the file used to send these letters may have been more comprehensive than necessary. The CMS-588 form is required of the entity that receives payments. In most groups the individual providers have re-assigned benefits to the group so it is the group that receives payments. There for it is important that the group update its CMS-588 form with WPS but it is not necessary for individual providers to do so if they are not receiving payments from Medicare.

Is it necessary for providers currently receiving paper checks to complete a CMS-588 form (Electronic Funds Transfer Agreement)?
No, if you are receiving paper checks you are not required to complete a CMS-588 form for the transition. However, if future updates are made to your provider number, a CMS-588 form may be required per CMS guidelines.

If a provider application receives approval between now and March 1st, should claims be held?
If a provider's enrollment application is approved between now and March 1st, it will likely be too late to receive approval to send through ASK. Hold claims until March 1st but get a CMS-588 form to WPS as soon as possible

When will online applications be available?
This is a CMS initiative and the exact date cannot be determined at this time.
